I Burned How Many Calories??? |
||||
Many people live and die by the numbers on the calorie readouts on the cardio equipment at the gym, especially the super high ones on the Eliptical machines. Jim Birrell, vice president of product development for Precor says that, to ensure the accuracy of these numbers, the company has conducted extensive research by calculating a test group's oxygen intake while they exercised. He cautions, however, that the numbers should be taken as a guide, not gospel. Wayne Westcott, PhD, fitness research director at the South Shore YMCA in Quincy MA says, "There are many variables that are not factored into the calculations. These include: the exerciser's muscle to fat ratio (the more muscle, the faster the metabolism, the more calories burned) and technique. If you support your bodyweight at the railings, for example, you exert yourself less and will not burn as many calories as the machine says you are."
