Green Tea: What are the benefits?

Feb. 13, 2004-  Green tea has been noted by many professionals as a health tool that may potentially be used to help an array of health conditions from weight loss to cancer prevention. It is considered a healthier alternative to daily coffee consumption and it is included in trace amounts in Biometics’ BIO FUEL and CELL CARE.

Here are some of the top health benefits of green tea:
1.      Tea contains antioxidants. Green tea contains powerful antioxidants called catechins1 that rid the body of free radicals due to pollutants.
2.      Tea may reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke. 2  The powerful antioxidants in tea may help to lower cholesterol. Blood clots formed from cholesterol and blood platelets cause a rise in risk of heart attack and stroke, but the antioxidants in tea can potentially help stop this from happening.
3.      Green tea may help prevent cancer. Studies have shown that tea catechins act as powerful inhibitors of cancer growth. 1 National Cancer Institute researchers are also investigating the therapeutic use of green tea and testing green tea as a preventative agent against skin cancer.
4.      Green tea can protect your bones. Green tea contains phytochemicals , which act as antioxidants or hormones, that could potentially help the body to maintain stronger bones. 3
5.      Tea makes a great smile. Contrary to popular belief, tea is actually good for your teeth. It is the sugar added to tea that can cause a problem. Tea, by itself, contains fluoride and tannins that may keep plaque away. 3
6.      Tea can help your body’s immune defenses. Antioxidants also help the immune system fight off infection and disease. Immunologists at Harvard University discovered that people who drank five cups of black or green tea a day for 2 weeks strengthened their immune system so much that they pumped out 10 times more cold and flu virus-fighting interferon than those who did not drink tea.4
7.      Tea increases your metabolism. Green tea has been shown to actually increase metabolic rate so that you can burn 70 to 80 additional calories by drinking five cups of green tea per day. Over a year’s time, you could lose eight pounds just by drinking green tea.2
