High Blood Pressure Risk Assessment Test
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
What Increases Your Risk?
Risk factors for primary (essential) high blood
pressure include:
1. A family history of high blood pressure.
2. Aging.
3. Black race.
4. Sodium (salt) intake.
5. Excessive alcohol consumption.
Other
possible risk factors include:
1.Low intake of potassium, magnesium, and calcium.
2.Long-term exposure to lead (in men), such as in the workplace (may be a
risk
factor)
3. Sleep apnea and sleep-disordered breathing
4. Depression
People
who have high blood pressure along with any of the following risk
factors are at increased risk of developing complications, such as
heart disease, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, and eye damage
(retinopathy):
1.Cigarette smoking
2.High cholesterol (total cholesterol over 240 milligrams per deciliter [mg/dL];
3.Diabetes
4. A history of early coronary artery disease in a parent or sibling (before
age 45 for men or age 55 for women)
5. Male sex
6. Black race
7. Being overweight
8. Lack
of exercise
9. Enlarged lower left heart chamber (left ventricle)
