Nutritional Supplements and Type II Diabetes

DID YOU KNOW? . . .
Dietary habits and body weight are major risk factors for Type II diabetes. HHS’ Diabetes Prevention Program reported that diet and exercise, which resulted in a 5% to 7% loss of body weight, lowered the incidence of Type II diabetes by 58%!!! An estimated 80% of those who develop Type II diabetes are overweight.*

The CDC estimates that approximately 6.2% of Americans (17 million people) have diabetes. Among these 17 million, an estimated 5.9 million have not yet been diagnosed, most not realizing they even have pre-symptoms of the disease. Type I diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells, which are responsible for making insulin, the hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. in which the cells do not use insulin properly. Type II diabetes accounts for nearly 90% of all diabetic cases. Recent studies from renowned institutes all over the globe have tested nutritional supplementation Type II diabetes is an insulin-resistant disorder as a means of controlling and managing diabetic symptoms. Other studies indicate some nutrients may even prevent pre-diabetic impaired glucose tolerance. The most notable studies are the beneficial effects of antioxidants and fatty acids in blood glucose levels for managing symptoms and other related health problems associated with Type II diabetes.

Vitamins C, E, CoQ10, and the antioxidant properties of ALA (alpha-lipoic acid), Selenium, zinc and chromium, have been shown to positively affect insulin and blood sugar metabolism, normalize blood pressure and assist in reducing protein in the urinary tract through cellular energy production – a benefit to all diabetic patients. Vitamin B-complexes, especially niacin and biotin, assist in controlling insulin secretion. Botanical extracts and herbs, such as: Gymnema Sylvestre, bilberry, grape seed extract, flaxseed oil, pine bark extract (to name a few), are helpful in controlling other health-related problems caused by Type II diabetes, (e.g: high blood pressure, kidney complications, obesity and vision problems). Essential fatty acids, such as Omega-3 (fish and flaxseed oils) and Omega-6 (gamma-linolenic acid – GLA’s), are suspected to improve the odds against developing Type II diabetes. It has also been discovered that Evening Primrose Oil (a GLA co-factor) and Oleic Acid (a long-chain fatty acid) are effective in completely preventing the restriction of a metabolic pathway that is present in diabetes. And vanadium (known co-factor in enzymatic functioning) according to an investigational research study in Kyoto University in Japan, is not only effective in treating or relieving diabetic symptoms, but is currently believed to also prevent the onset of the disease.*

Numerous studies point to the critical importance of good nutritional supplementation in managing and controlling Type II diabetes, as well as the symptoms of other diabetic health-related issues. More studies are required, but good indicators are pointing to the potential assistance of appropriate nutritional supplementation as a preventative measure against the onset of the disease.
